My ANZAC Poem's
Jack and Tom
A Sonnet
By Athena Miller
Over the top, I’ll race you see who’s first,
Boys playing with a toy boat in the sea.
Pretending to be pirates or whalers sailing the ocean deep.
Happy being together playing at the beach.
Over the top, I’ll race you see who’s first.
Come On Jack, let’s go fishing.
Come on Tom, it’s footy practice time
Bird’s singing in the open air.
Over the top, I’ll race you see who’s first.
Sitting, waiting, suitcases in hand for the train.
To the trenches, bullet’s shooting everywhere, sitting scared.
Over the top, I’ll race you see who’s first.
Poppies down, one man still stands, remembering his lost friend.
Over the top Jack, I’ll race you see who’s first Tom.
Jack and Tom
An Acrostic/ Name Poem
By Athena Miller
Joyfully joking at the beach, playing with each other
A game started, over the top, I’ll race you see who’s first
Come on Tom let’s go play, Come on Jack let’s go now
Kicking the ball, to each other, back and forth
At the train stop waiting to get on
Next in the trenches, wearing our Army uniforms
Dangerous bullet’s shooting through the sky
Together we will fight, like we used to play
Over the top, I’ll race you see whos first
Memories of you, my old mate, are all I have left.
